Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measures the time between when a positron enters a material to the detection of the radiation emitted by positron annihilation and it is commonly used to detect the presence of defects in a material. We aimed to determine whether a high-energy positron beam, like the DESY II Synchrotron, can be used to detect the open-volume defects in concrete using our experimental proposal. Detecting these defects is important as they affect the structural integrity of concrete and pose a significant threat to the safety of infrastructure.
I worked together with Mishaal Butt, Emman Sychiuco, Anya Chan, and Sanya Chawla and we shared equal responsibility in the research, writing, and editing of this paper.
