Hidden Academia

This project has been entered for the Microsoft Imagine Cup Jr. 2020 under the AI for Cultural Heritage category.

Problem

Adolescence is a time of discovering your identity where gender and race play a huge role, so what happens when minority students cannot find themselves in the ever-evolving book we call history? Textbooks define what is considered significant in history, so through the exclusion of minorities a dangerous message is sent: you are not important enough. According to Taylor Giarrizo, this can result in “the student’s skewed perceptions of minorities [which] can create disconnected and ignorant inter-group relationships. Barriers are formed and tensions are created as a partial result of what is being taught through textbooks”.

Description

A cross-platform app which allows the user to scan the faces of historical figures in their textbooks and suggests alternative historical figures who have also contributed significantly to a similar field. However, the individual provided will be a person whose achievements may have been hidden away because they happen to be a member of a minority group.

Role

This project wouldn’t be possible without my teammates Divya Malhotra, Farah Malaika, and Syazmin Syahwira. My role revolved around programming and developing the app prototype in Xamarin.
